Founded in 1893, the Galeries Lafayette department store is a Paris fashion institution. It was established by two cousins who decided to open a novelty store at the corner of Lafayette and Chausée d’Antin in the active Parisian shopping district near the Opera. In 1896, their company purchased the entire building at n°1 rue La Fayette followed by further expansion on the block in 1905.

The elegant lady in this 1923 poster proudly advertises: "Only sell the best goods at the best prices - This strictly applied fundamental principle is responsible for our remarkable growth".  It further states that, "the Galeries Lafayettes was the only department store in the world having annual sales approaching one billion francs". Amazingly, 86 years later in 2009, Galeries Lafayette recorded earnings of over one billion euros.
