Francisque Poulbot (1879-1946) was a gifted painter, illustrator and sculptor who designed a number of posters as well as illustrations that were published in a variety of publications. He spent many years living in Montmartre to the point where les Petis Poulbots, the street urchins of Montmartre in Paris, were affectionately nicknamed after him. During the First World War, he drew patriotic posters and postcards, for which he was put under house arrest under the German occupation of France during World War II.
These posters served to remind of the horrors of war and the need for solidarity of all the French. The design bring into picture the experience of war by French non-combatants - in this example, innocent and pleading faces of children, perhaps destined to become orphans.
